The hit animated adventure KPop Demon Hunters is getting a follow-up. The original film, which quickly became a global sensation after landing on Netflix in mid-2025, has officially secured a sequel.
What’s been confirmed
Netflix and Sony have agreed to move forward with a second film. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are expected to return, although deals are still being finalised. According to industry reports, the sequel may not be released until 2029, so fans will have a long wait.
Kang has previously said that the creative team always intended to explore more of this universe. Speaking to Variety earlier this year, she noted that many elements were left open simply because the first film ran only 85 minutes.
Casting details are still under discussion. Rei Ami, who voices Zoey, has said she hopes to return but has not yet received confirmation. Speaking to E! News, she remarked that she is waiting for updates along with everyone else.
A record-shattering hit
KPop Demon Hunters is now regarded as Netflix’s most-watched original title. It drew more than 325 million views in its first 91 days and its success was so overwhelming that sing-along editions were later released in cinemas.
Its soundtrack has been equally influential. Golden, Your Idol and Soda Pop landed on the Billboard Hot 100 and are considered likely contenders for award nominations. Voice performers Rei Ami, Audrey Nuna and Ejae, who portray the fictional group behind the songs, have been visible ahead of awards season and are set to appear in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
During Netflix’s second-quarter earnings call, co-CEO Ted Sarandos singled out the film as an example of immediate audience connection, saying its music and story are likely to keep it popular for years.
When can you watch the sequel?
Current estimates place the release in 2029. Until then, the original KPop Demon Hunters remains available to stream on Netflix.
