Australian Game Studios Are Booming, and Roblox Wants to Fund Their Next Big Idea

The global gaming landscape is shifting, and Australian developers are sitting right in the sweet spot. According to the latest Australian Game Developer Survey (AGDS) Snapshot from IGEA, local gaming studios grew by an impressive 23% in 2024. Even better? A solid 61% of these studios are planning to hire new talent in 2025. It is a booming local industry, and major global platforms are starting to roll out the red carpet to capture this creative momentum.

Enter Roblox. If your primary association with the platform is blocky avatars, virtual theme parks, and chaotic obstacle courses, it is time for a serious revisit. The gaming giant is aggressively expanding its horizons, targeting an older demographic and searching for “novel games” that completely redefine what the platform’s engine can achieve. To make this happen, they have just announced two massive developer initiatives: the Roblox Incubator and the Roblox Jumpstart programs.

The driving force behind this new push is simple data. The audience on Roblox is no longer just kids spending their pocket money on digital accessories. As of late January, 45% of global daily active users have completed an age check, and of that group, a notable 27% are over the age of 18. In regions like Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, where age checks became mandatory in December, adoption has hit approximately 60%.

With the 18 to 34 age group growing at over 50% year-over-year in the United States alone, there is a substantial, untapped market for more mature, complex, and visually stunning experiences.

Funding the Future with Incubator and Jumpstart

To ensure this new, older audience has something to play, Roblox is investing directly in the creators themselves.

The Roblox Incubator is a six-month, milestone-driven program tailored for experienced development teams. If you have a strong prototype and a small team ready to dedicate serious hours, this program takes promising concepts and scales them into polished, commercially successful hits. Cohorts of up to 40 teams will get direct mentorship from Roblox subject matter experts and crucial support in audience building.

The Roblox Jumpstart program operates on a continuous, rolling basis. It is designed both for creators entirely new to Roblox and veterans wanting to experiment with something outside the box. Pitches kick off at this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC), offering participants ongoing access to experts and user acquisition programs to get their games off the ground.

The Quest for Novel Games

Vlad Loktev, Chief Creator Ecosystem Officer at Roblox has summed up perfectly what the platform is looking for: “Our vision for Roblox is to be the platform for all ages, and we are calling on ambitious creators with bold ideas to build the next generation of experiences.”

They want games that make players genuinely question the engine they are running on. Currently, genres like RPGs, strategy games, and deep shooters are heavily underrepresented despite high demand from the older cohort. Roblox is actively hunting for projects that push aesthetic boundaries, think hyperrealistic 3D assets and stylised 2.5D graphics that ditch the classic blocky look entirely.

They also want deep gameplay mechanics. By pairing sophisticated metagame systems with Roblox’s massive multiplayer scale and out-of-the-box AI creation tools (like their built-in Assistant for coding and world-building), the goal is to create highly replayable experiences.

A Golden Opportunity for Local Talent

With the Australian games industry expanding rapidly, these new Roblox programs offer a brilliant launchpad for local studios looking to experiment without bearing the massive costs of global server infrastructure. Roblox provides the engine, the global audience (who play an average of 22 different games a month), and now, the direct mentorship to help novel ideas succeed.

For developers looking to scale their next big idea, the platform might just be the most lucrative place to start. Applications for both the Incubator and Jumpstart programs are open right now.

Who qualifies: Experienced small teams who have a strong prototype of a game (or plan to build one) and are ready to dedicate a significant effort to development during the program. Find more information about selection criteria and apply for the 2026 cohort today
