A knife-wielding man has been shot in the stomach after allegedly lunging at police officers near a Sydney train station.

Police say the man, aged in his 30s, challenged officers with a knife before he was tasered and then shot near Campbelltown station on Wednesday afternoon.

"Police deployed a taser, however he continued to threaten police, before being shot," a spokesperson said in a statement.

"The man was taken to Liverpool Hospital suffering a single gunshot wound to his stomach."

A crime scene has been established on Hurley Street and a critical incident investigation launched.

No officer or other members of the public were injured, detectives say.
