A father and son have been charged after being caught with kava at Darwin Airport.
Detectives and the Dog Operations Unit intercepted and seized 19 kilograms of kava that was allegedly bound for Maningrida yesterday.
The 17-year-old boy and 53-year-old man have since been charged with possession of and supplying a trafficable quantity of kava.
Acting Senior Sergeant Riva Zio has condemned the behaviour.
“The illegal supply of kava is considered to be very serious offending that has long term financial and social implications on remote communities.”
“This behaviour works in complete contradiction to the ongoing efforts of police, government and non-government agencies who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of all community members who reside at and visit our regions.”
Anyone with information on the supply of alcohol or drugs to NT communities is urged to contact police on 131 444 or report it anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
