Prisoner Dies in Custody After Medical Episode in Alice Springs

Northern Territory Police are investigating the death of a 35-year-old prisoner at the Alice Springs Correctional Centre.

The man collapsed inside the facility on Tuesday afternoon, with correctional staff immediately beginning CPR before St John Ambulance paramedics arrived.

He was taken to Alice Springs Hospital, where he was later declared dead.

NT Police say initial investigations indicate the man died as a result from a medical episode.

The death is being treated as a death in custody, with a report to be prepared for the Coroner.

In a statement, the Department of Corrections says support is being provided to prisoners and staff affected by the incident, including access to wellbeing and counselling services.
