A Darwin man has had his firearm licences suspended after he attempted to send a gun in the mail.

Western Australia police intercepted the post, finding a gun hidden in a videocassette recorder.

Investigations were conducted identifying the sender as the 70-year-old from Darwin.

It’s understood the man was intending to send the gun to a WA licenced gunowner.

NT police charged him with three offences, sending a firearm by mail, possessing an altered firearm and failure to dispose of a firearm.

The man appeared in court in February when he was fined and had his firearm licence suspended for ten years.

200 firearms were seized.

Acting Senior Sergeant Aaron Chapman said NT Police remain steadfast in their commitment to public safety.

“[NT Police] will continue to investigate all reported firearm related offences. We want to remind the community that firearm ownership is a privilege granted to responsible licence holders, not a right,” he said.

“Any failure to comply with licence conditions or the provisions of the Firearms Act 1997 will be thoroughly investigated.”
