Darwin residents are being offered the chance to walk for a good cause, at an event raising funds for first responders’ mental health support.

The March for mental health will see defence personnel and first responders walk around East Point Reserve this Saturday (August 16).

The event is run by Walking Off The War Within, an initiative which was started by former soldier and firefighter Nathan Shanahan, who tragically lost his battle with mental illness in 2016.

Funds raised will support research into depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

NT Fire and Rescue Service Chief Fire Officer Stephen Sewell says the movement has grown over the years.

“Walking Off The War Within has grown into a nationwide movement with the events building stronger communities and creating conversations,” he says.

“We know the psychological impacts of working in emergency services and support this important initiative, and I encourage everyone in Darwin to come down on Saturday and march for mental health.”

If you’d like to join the event tickets are available for free online.
