Medical executives reportedly considered closing the emergency department at Palmerston Regional Hospital due to staff shortages.

The revelations come after a Code Yellow was issued for Royal Darwin Hospital last week.

Health Minister Natasha Fyles says she cannot confirm the reports but admits hospital staff are struggling to keep up with demand.

"I do know we have significant staffing challenges across the Territory, some in remote clinics," she says.

Hospital beds from Katherine and Nhulunbuy could be sent to Darwin's two main hospitals to help staff handle the demand.

"Katherine and Nhulunbuy are fantastic assets and they've got the capacity to provide additional beds into the system," Ms Fyles says.
