High toxic levels found in Top End fish

Northern Territory residents have been warned not to eat fish from the Katherine River after tests detected high levels of toxic chemicals.

The NT's prized barramundi has tested positive for elevated contamination levels linked to old firefighting foams used at the nearby Top End RAAF Base Tindal, where pollutants leeched into Katherine's bores used for drinking water and irrigation.

A Defence Department interim report identified local seafood as having potential health risks, a day after the federal government announced a $5.7 million support package for Katherine locals which included voluntary blood testing.
