NAIF Boost For Barra Farm

The Humpty Doo Barramundi Farm will undertake a $57 million expansion, half of which will be funded under the Federal Governments Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility.

It's the first grant to be awarded to a Northern Territory business and only the 2nd under the scheme.

Yesterday Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison described the scheme as disappointing

Federal Minister for Northern Australia Matt Canavan shares a similar sentiment but hopes changes will encourage more businesses to get on board.

"It has been disappointing and that's why we've made these changes recently. It's been a new way of trying to fund projects. When things don't work out as you expect you make changes to make them work better," Mr Canavan said.

Northern Territory Treasurer Nicole Manison agrees.

"We're certainly positive about a few other potential projects with the NAIF and we continue to lobby the Commonwealth Government around it," Ms Manison said.

The first stage of the upgrades at the farm include:

  • Building a solar generation facility
  • Developing a specialised Barramundi nursery
  • and an automatic feed storage and distribution facility.
