It is time to dust off your flannel shirts and find those old gig posters, because Australian rock royalty is headed back to the main stage. Legendary trio Spiderbait have officially announced a massive national tour this July to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of their seminal 1996 album, Ivy & the big apples.
If you grew up in the 90s, this album likely provided the soundtrack to your youth. Whether it was the frantic energy of “Buy Me a Pony” or the sun-drenched, melodic charm of “Calypso,” Ivy & the big apples was the record that catapulted three friends from a small country town into the global spotlight.
A Landmark in Australian Rock
Released in 1996, Ivy & the big apples was a true game-changer for the Australian alternative scene. It was bold, energetic, and unapologetically local.
The album peaked at number three on the ARIA charts and stayed in the Top 50 for nearly a year. To mark this three-decade milestone, the band is not just touring; they are also releasing a special 30th Anniversary Edition LP on July 3, perfect for those of us who still appreciate the tactile joy of vinyl.
The Ultimate 90s Reunion
The tour kicks off on Saturday 4 July in Brisbane and will hit Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney. But the band isn’t coming alone. In a move that feels like the ultimate 90s festival lineup, they are bringing along some very special guests for select dates.
Fans can expect to see indie-pop legends Custard, the gritty rock powerhouse Magic Dirt, punk stalwarts The Meanies, and stoner-rock icons Tumbleweed. Emerging Melbourne rockers The Gnomes will also be joining the entire tour to provide a fresh jolt of energy to the proceedings.
“To play the record live in its entirety around the nation will be mega,” the band shared. “And a fantastic lineup of so many of our fave bands… see you soon Australia!”
Why You Should Be There
Spiderbait is a band that seems to defy the ageing process. Their 2024 tour for the anniversary of Tonight Alright saw them playing to sold-out crowds with an intensity that many younger acts struggle to match. There is a specific kind of magic that happens when these three get together; a decades-long friendship translated into soaring riffs and thunderous drums.
