Curry was a rare talent who could bounce from the West End stages of London to massive Hollywood blockbusters. He didn’t just play characters; he completely owned them. He burst onto the screen in 1975 with his debut feature film role, bringing a wild, rebellious energy to The Rocky Horror Picture Show that audiences had never seen before.
He followed up that early success with a string of diverse roles in films like Annie, The Ploughman’s Lunch, and Times Square. A decade later, he had us all laughing as the fast-talking butler Wadsworth in the 1985 comedy Clue. That same year, he was completely unrecognisable under heavy makeup as the terrifying villain Darkness in Ridley Scott’s fantasy film Legend.
The 90s: Stealing the Show
The 1990s saw Curry popping up everywhere, usually stealing the show from the main cast. Who could forget the smarmy hotel concierge Mr. Hector in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, or his fantastic turn as Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers? He was even Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island, proving he could work alongside Kermit the Frog just as easily as Hollywood’s biggest action stars.
His resume from that decade alone is staggering, featuring memorable parts in The Hunt for Red October, Loaded Weapon 1, The Shadow, and Congo. But for many, his most famous 90s moment was putting on the creepy clown makeup. As Pennywise in the original mini-series adaptation of IT, he created a villain so scary that he probably caused a global spike in the fear of clowns.
He continued working steadily in live-action film and television right up until his stroke. Fans might remember his appearances in movies like Charlie’s Angels, Scary Movie 2, and Addams Family Reunion, as well as guest spots on TV hits like Will & Grace and Agatha Christie’s Poirot.
