If you stayed until the very end of the credits in 2023, you knew this day was coming. After three years of waiting and a whole lot of “is it or isn’t it” speculation, Nintendo and Illumination have finally given us what we wanted: a proper look at everyone’s favourite green dinosaur.

The latest trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has officially premiered, and while the film promises a cosmic adventure, the footage suggests a massive celebration of the entire Mario legacy. Set to be the crown jewel of the Mario character’s 40th anniversary, the sequel looks to be leaning heavily into the nostalgia that made the first film a $1.361 billion juggernaut.

The star of the show is, without a doubt, Yoshi. The new trailer doesn’t just tease him; it provides an extended sequence showing his first meeting with our favourite Brooklyn-born plumbers. In a nod to the SNES era, the trailer even concludes with a glimpse of Yoshi wielding a Super Scope (because why wouldn’t a dinosaur have a 90s light gun?)

But the cameos don’t stop there. The montage confirms that the cast is expanding rapidly. We caught glimpses of Birdo, along with the adorable (and slightly chaotic) Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. It seems directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are raiding the entire Nintendo vault, with references spanning from Super Mario World to Super Mario Odyssey.

Joining them is Brie Larson, who has been officially confirmed as the voice of the ethereal Rosalina, the protector of the Lumas. Given Larson’s well-known real-life love for Nintendo, it feels like a match made in heaven. Also Benny Safdie, stepping into the tiny, fire-breathing shoes of Bowser Jr.

A Sequel We Actually Want to See

The first film wasn’t just a hit; it was a cultural event. It currently sits as the third-highest-grossing animated film of all time. With composer Brian Tyler returning to blend iconic game themes into a cinematic score, the sequel aims to capture that same lightning in a bottle.

While the Super Mario Galaxy games provide the narrative backbone the filmmakers have promised “surprises for fans of every Mario era.”
