I just love returning to a world thinking I’ve seen everything only to find a wealth of new secrets waiting. When Ghost of Yōtei first launched, it offered a breathtaking journey across the plains of Ezo. Now, with the arrival of the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition on the PS5, we are drawn right back in. But this is not just a simple repackaging of the base game. With a brand-new story expansion, an addictive survival mode, and some serious technical upgrades under the hood, this release demands a closer look.

Whether you are a returning veteran looking to upgrade for $22.95 AUD or a newcomer ready to dive in for the full $124.95 AUD experience, here is everything you need to know about Atsu’s expanded adventure.

The Story: Echoes of Sekigahara

The heart of this new package is the Echoes of Sekigahara narrative expansion. The story pulls our dual-katana-wielding protagonist, Atsu, into the Ashoro Foothills, a rugged, beautifully realised, and previously unseen area of Ezo. This new territory has been claimed by the Vipers, a ruthless enemy faction fiercely loyal to a mysterious figure known only as the Snake.

What makes this expansion particularly engaging is its narrative structure. The story is told through a clever mix of present-day exploration and dramatic flashbacks to the historic Battle of Sekigahara. This dual-timeline approach fleshes out Atsu’s complex history with Nagato, a key figure from her past who fought by her side on the mainland. It adds a welcome layer of emotional weight to the endless sword clashes. The Vipers themselves introduce fresh enemy types that force you to rethink your combat strategies, and the new heavy weapons you can wield feel incredibly satisfying to connect with. Add in a handful of new Mythic Tales, armour sets, and abilities, and the Ashoro Foothills quickly become a compelling reason to sharpen your blades once more.

Mechanics: Surviving the ‘Most Wanted’ Mode

If the story expansion is the emotional core of the Complete Edition, the new Most Wanted mode is the adrenaline-fueled pulse. This is a single-player combat survival mode infused with roguelite elements, and it is easily one of the most addictive additions to the game.

You are tasked with taking down increasingly difficult bounties inspired by the notorious Yōtei Six. But you do not have to do it alone, or rather, you have options. The mode features four playable characters: Atsu (dual katana), Oyuki (kusarigama), Nagato (yari), and (in a brilliant piece of fan service) Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima, returning with his iconic katana and all four of his signature combat stances.

The mechanical variety here is superb. Each character feels distinct, bringing their own unique weapons, abilities, Ultimates, and Kill Streaks to the table. As you survive waves of enemies and minibosses, you select perks and upgrades to craft a specific build before facing the final bounty boss. Whether you are focusing on parry windows, gear loadouts, or summons, the urge to try “just one more run” is undeniably strong. Furthermore, earning ‘Mon’ between runs to permanently unlock techniques, weapon upgrades, and cosmetics (which carry over to the main game) ensures that even a failed run feels rewarding.

A Technical Leap: Enter QSSR

It is also worth highlighting the technical improvements introduced in this update. Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition is one of the first titles to utilise Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a brand-new AI upscaling technology for the PS5. Without getting too bogged down in the technical jargon, QSSR essentially improves image detail and frame rate stability. In practice, the Ashoro Foothills look sharper, and the frantic, multi-enemy encounters in Most Wanted run flawlessly without a single dropped frame.

Coupled with the free update that brings a high-contrast accessibility option, the much-requested armour transmog system (allowing you to keep your favourite armour’s stats while wearing a different set’s appearance), and the ‘Beauty of Yōtei’ mode for pure, undisturbed exploration and photography, the technical polish on display here is remarkable.

The Comparison: Who is this for?

If you enjoyed the punishing but rewarding roguelite progression of God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, you will find yourself right at home in the Most Wanted mode. Similarly, if the cooperative combat and character variety of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends kept you busy for months, the single-player mechanical depth offered by playing as Oyuki, Nagato, and Jin Sakai will absolutely scratch that same itch.

Final Verdict

The Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition does exactly what a great expansion should do: it builds meaningfully on the foundation of the original while introducing fresh ways to play. Echoes of Sekigahara delivers a gripping, emotional narrative that deepens Atsu’s character, while the Most Wanted mode offers highly replayable combat challenges that will test your reflexes to their limits. While the wave-survival format might not appeal to everyone, the sheer volume of content, combined with the visual enhancements of QSSR, makes this an exceptional package.

Highly Recommended.
