As the interest rates climb, Bunnings has entered the housing market.

As the cost of living crisis grows and the housing market becomes harder to enter (and even harder to pay off), Bunnings have released a DIY flat pack for backyard studios/pods and honestly, I’m kinda here for it. Even if it’s very much a temporary fix for a much larger problem.

“They provide an affordable way for customers to add functional space to their homes,” – Ryan Baker, Bunnings, Chief Operating Officer

The backyard pods comes as demand for seperate ‘tiny homes’ grow as property prices grow and the ongoing housing crisis continues. In 2025 the median age for an Australian first home buyer was approximately aged 34 to 37 years of age. The median age in which Australians typically leave home is still relatively young at 23 for women and 24 for men but a growing trend is seeing young Australians remain at home due to the rising costs to rent and to buy.

In this actual flat pack you can purchase from Bunnings, it comes with pre-fabricated panels, eaves, and insulation. The Queensland and Victorian governments have relaxed many building and planning rules for second dwellings like these studios. During all this, the federal government aims to build 1.2 million new homes before the end of 2029, however early projections show that as of right now they may only achieve 800,000.

Matt Decarne, the Elsewhere Pods founder, has shared that the pods have taken on if interest due to both the short time frame it takes to build and the ease in which it can be built.
