NT police have completed their investigation into a large bushfire at Darwin River earlier this month.
The fire at Leonino Road reached emergency warning level on August 8, spreading through a number of properties and destroying one home and several vehicles.
A large-scale multi-agency response was needed to bring the bushfire under control, with initial investigations rendering the fire as suspicious.
Further enquiries by NT Police and Fire and Rescue Service investigators have revealed that the fire was accidental and likely started as a result of machinery being used on a rural property.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer says the fire is a timely reminder for Territorians to have plans in place and their properties prepared.
“Late in the dry season when grasses and vegetation are at their driest, strong, dry winds can lead to fires so intense that they are difficult to fight and control.”
“Your Bushfire Survival Plan will help you take action and avoid making last minute decisions that could prove deadly during a bushfire.”
Investigators have thanked members of the public who provided vital information.
