The Northern Territory Government is taking additional measures to improve the safety on our public bus network.

In addition to recent improvements that include increased powers for transit and security officers and safety screens for bus drivers, commuters can now expect to see a more visible security presence on board the bus.

The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics has launched a three-month trial with an additional 14 security officers to be positioned on key bus routes, riding alongside the passengers and providing a visible deterrent to antisocial behaviour.

Having dedicated Security officers riding the network is a first for the Northern Territory and the trial aims to improve behaviour on and confidence in the bus network.

The security officers have the powers to demand a person to supply their name, date of birth and address. They can also give direction and require someone to get off a bus.
